03/11/2009 - Tatton Show 2009 - Lake District Bluebird Garden

More than 40 years after Donald Campbell’s last water speed record attempt on Coniston Water, his hydroplane Blue Bird K7 is being restored and preparations are underway for her return to the village. This garden presents a timely tribute to this heroic figure and his iconic craft.

All boats attempting the world water speed record have to carry an infinity symbol painted on their hull.

This distinctive figure-of-eight design is the main feature of the garden and has been recreated in traditional dry stone walling. The lower loop of the symbol encloses a pool of water and the naturalistic planting scheme reflects the rugged landscape of the lakes, incorporating silver birches, lush green foliage and white planting, punctuated of course with blue to link the whole scheme to its watery theme.

The Lake District Poets Garden

“In human life there are moments worth ages.”

The garden has been designed to reflect the writings and philosophy of William Wordsworth, the Lake District’s best known poet.

Wordsworth himself was a keen gardener and developed the gardens at Rydal Mount where he resided from 1813 until 1859.

He had strong views about how the garden should look, in particular he believed that a garden should be informal and in harmony with nature.

In our garden we have tried to utilise natural Lake District materials, and naturalistic planting to create a restful sanctuary that can be viewed from the Victorian stone summerhouse.

“In the climate of England there are for the lover of nature, days which are worth months… even years.”

18/07/2007 - RHS Tatton 2007

This year Andrew has teamed up with The Coppermines, Honister Slate Mine, and several other Lake District enterprises to build a garden entitled "Lake Disrict Reflections"

28/07/2005 - RHS Tatton Flower Show

Designers: Andrew Loudon & Beetham Nurseries
Sponsors: The Copper Mines & Lakes Cottages
This garden is designed to demonstrate what can be achieved with a little imagination to brighten up neglected spaces within a building such as a school, office block or hospital. The garden offers a means of escape from the florescent lights and re-circulated air within the building, to a fresh outdoor space without the hustle and bustle of work or study.

The garden contains an L shaped walkway under a green roof with lush herbaceous planting surrounding a lozenge shape slate water feature that provides a visual amenity to lift the spirits of the visitors. The back wall is constructed from sandstone with large water washed river stones protruding slightly to give a tactile element to the journey between the two spaces that the corridor links.

It is constructed from Lakeland Slate, and can now be seen in Coniston Village, by The Bridge, in the gardens of The Coppermines & Lakes Cottages

The Philosophical Garden

Designer: Andrew Loudon
Sponsor: SWS UK Ltd
Contractor: Andrew Loudon Traditional & Decorative Stonework

"Andrew Loudon is a dry stone walling master craftsman. The centre of the garden is a stone sphere, sitting opposite a negative image of itself, recessed into a slate stone wall. A curved path winds up to a small seat, positioned on a pebble mosaic. All this is surrounded by dense herbaceous planting."

With springtime woodland planting, this garden is designed to be a quiet sanctury to retreat to. Due to its small size it also acts as a visual amenity to view through a window or patio doors and features one of our lakeland slate stone balls.

We were awarded a Silver Gilt Medal for this garden.

27/07/2004 - RHS Tatton Flower Show 2004 - Gold Medal & "Best in the Show"

"Solid Geometry" is this years entry, built in conjuction with Beetham Nurseries, and part sponsored by The Coppermines & Lakes Cottages, Coniston.

26/07/2004 - RHS Tatton Flower Show

The garden features sandstone boundary walls containing panels of geometric stonework. Within these boundaries a series of stone geometric sculptures are partially shrouded by dense herbaceous planting. The path of York stone flags meanders through the planting to a simple oak bench.

25/07/2004 - RHS Tatton Flower Show

The garden has been inspired by the work of Isamu Noguchi and his use of natural materials and geometric forms and is designed to illustrate how traditional materials, plants and techniques can be used to create a contemporary garden that maintains a traditional feel.

28/07/2003 - RHS Tatton Flower Show 2003
